The conquest of space

The great economic boom brings a spirit of renewal to the world, and humanity challenges its confines, seeking new horizons: the conquest of space, the first man on the moon, a new golden age of science fiction and the first debates on artificial intelligence.

The conquest of space

Foundation of Emilceramica

Against this backdrop of new horizons and exciting challenges, Emilceramica is founded in 1961. Based in Italy’s Emilia region, the company has a pragmatic attitude and a clear game plan: to produce high quality ceramics for distribution throughout our home region. But history will take us much, much further afield...

The technological revolution

Communications cancel out distances, enabling us to experience things far beyond the here and now. In “Rocket man”, Elton John sings about a new, hyper-technological world, inspired by the many space missions of the time. The Space Shuttle programme is launched and the first space station designed to enable human beings to live in space is built. The first Star Wars film appears in cinemas.

The technological revolution

Innovation opens new pathways

Emilceramica expands in both commercial and production terms: the company is one of the first to invest in the single-firing process, a major “technological leap forward” that provides better quality and shorter production times. Ambitions are no longer limited to Emilia: the world is within easy reach.

Space is trendy

Culture is inspired by the space adventures of the previous years, which contaminate the worlds of music, fashion and film. Thierry Mugler designs silver outfits like spacesuits and headgear like astronauts’ helmets. Science fiction films top the box office ratings wondering about the possibility of extra-terrestrial life forms, imagining new worlds and asking new questions about mankind’s role in the universe.

Expansion

Emilceramica innovates its production process with new roller kilns able to fire products faster. The number of collections grows, to offer a wide choice of models, colours and finishes. On the world market, which includes the United States and more than thirty countries worldwide, Emilceramica is seen as a company able to combine typical Made in Italy beauty and style with new technical qualities, producing more resistant, high-performing materials.

The birth of the Web

The ‘90s see the increasing popularity of a technology that will completely revolutionise the way we live: the World Wide Web, its origins derived from the conquest of space. Thanks to the Hubble telescope, the observation of the cosmos is no longer constrained by limitations of our atmosphere: space has never been so close.

The birth of the Web

The sustainable approach

The Earth becomes a space for us to love, protect, defend. Emilceramica is also aware of this, starting to produce electricity from cogeneration. Respect for the environment becomes a core value for the company, which invests in new processes to limit the impact on the planet. Its vocation for innovation powers the birth of Ergon, the group brand most strongly focused on experimentation and architectural design.

The new technological era

For the first time in history, a crew moves into a space station, achieving the great dream: man can live in space. Huge steps are made in scientific discovery: the famous particle accelerator is switched on at CERN in Geneva, launching the “most important project in the history of physics”. This is known as the “short decade” due to the speed at which technology achieves new objectives and passes into general use.

The new technological era

Acquisitions and new investments in Research and Development

The speed at which Emilceramica expands and innovates increases: the first American logistics and distribution subsidiaries are opened and Viva Ceramiche and Ceramiche Provenza are acquired. Research&Development investments also undergo a major acceleration: Emilgroup is one of the first companies to adopt Full HD digital technology, which is to mark a new era in the entire industry.

Reality surpasses the imagination

After a gap of 105 years, the Sun, Venus and the Earth are aligned. And while the first probe reaches Pluto, Elon Musk launches a Tesla into space, “driven” by Starman, a mannequin which completes the first orbit of the Sun in 2019, after a journey lasting one year.

A new life: birth of Emilgroup

Emilgroup, which combines all the brands in a more unified corporate image, is born. 2018 sees the birth of the Large Slabs plant, which specialises in the manufacture of digitally printed large sizes using a technology able to provide amazing quality of appearance while reducing the environmental impact of production.
